The Smile is a product of Covid-19. This British supergroup was formed in April 2020 when Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead were looking for something to keep them occupied during lockdown. That shouldn’t come as a surprise as, in addition to their day jobs, the two musicians have countless side projects on the go. Greenwood is in demand as a composer of soundtracks; Yorke has made a handful of solo records and is in the band Atoms For Peace with Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers). The third member of The Smile is Tom Skinner, a key player in the extremely vibrant London jazz scene. He is best known as one of the drummers in Sons Of Kemet. Entirely in keeping with the spirit of the age, The Smile’s introduction to the world was a surprise show during a 2021 livestream from Glastonbury, the UK equivalent of Rock Werchter. The first single ‘You Will Never Work In Television Again’ sounds like a raw version of Radiohead around the time of their breakthrough album ‘The Bends’ (1995).
